Joe Janes - Biography
Joe Janes is Associate Professor and Chair of the MLIS Program at the University of Washington Information School. A frequent speaker in the US and abroad, he is the Founding Director of the Internet Public Library and co-author of several books on librarianship, technology, and their interrelations. Janes also writes the “Internet Librarian” column for American Libraries magazine.
During his work on the Internet Public Library, Janes was able to explore how information and information resources work, what they are for, what they do, and what they tell us about the human condition. Janes' research focuses on libraries, how they work, how they change, how they have evolved, and what can be learned and adopted from previous practice and blended with new ideas to keep libraries a vital and necessary part of their communities.
Janes was the 2006 recipient of the Isadore Gilbert Mudge award from the American Library Association for distinguished contributions to reference librarianship. He holds an MLS and PhD from Syracuse University, and has taught at the University of Michigan, the University of Toronto, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the State University of New York at Albany, Syracuse University, and the University of Washington.
